How do we now define "Teacher"?

When one looks up definitions for a teacher, the explanations are along the lines of "a person whose occupation is teaching others, esp children" (Collins English Dictionary 2011). However, these explanations fall short as a teacher nowadays is not just a facilitator or an educator. A teacher plays many roles in their students' lives such as a listener, an advisor, a mentor, a coach, a friend and finally sometimes a parent.

It is true that multiple intelligences have to be catered for by the 21st century teacher. Also various learning styles - which may or may not be catered for by multiple intelligences - have to be catered for by the 21st century teacher.

  2. I agree with your explanation on what a teacher is. The roles that teachers should fill is very very important today. As there are many kids out there in the world that does not have this support at home, in rural areas and even in the most wealthiest of homes. In the rural areas most children's parents work far away from home or the child self are the head of the home looking after the siblings. In the wealthy homes, the parents work 24/7 just to pay off the mansions they are living in, when they are at home, they are working and spend no time with the children. Children dont have role models in their lives anymore and I think that teachers should be those role models to our children today.

  3. Surely. What makes a teacher effective? One that inspires. This refers to not just learning but also to life. This includes skills like listening, encouraging learners, has faith in them, stand up for them treat them equally etc.
