Why a paradigm shift is taking place?

A paradigm is a universally accepted way of thinking and doing within the world view in which it exists (Slabbert,J.A.de Kock,M.D.Hattignh,A.2009:21). A paradigm shift is thus when there are fundamental changes in the theories, concepts and principles of the prevailing framework, and we are faced with a new way of thinking (Slabbert,J.A.et al.2009:34).
The way in which John Dewey explains the reason for this paradigm shift is as follows:
  •   “An ounce of experience is better than a ton of theory simply because it is only in experience that any theory has vital and verifiable significance” (Slabbert,J.A.et al.2009:46).
  •   Dewey believed that reflection makes learning a transformational experience. This means that because your experiences are always changing, your reflection on your experience is changing and thus your theories and ways of thinking are also always changing. Your paradigm is thus always shifting. He also believed that this reflection brought about better quality learning (Slabbert,J.A.et al.2009:46).
  •   In the classroom, this means that learners are always sharing their experiences and thus transforming their knowledge (Slabbert,J.A.et al.2009:46).
  •   Reflection means taking an experience and analysing it critically. We build up a framework of experiences by comparing it to the experiences of others (Slabbert,J.A.et al.2009:46). A paradigm shift therefore takes place through mutual co-operation.

  2. A paradigm shift is the changes in the way of thinking from one generation to the next. The world is always changing and thus the way we interpret it and the way we think in it is also always changing (paradigm shift).
